LAUNCESTON, Tasmania — The Tasmanian rural and working dog community is mourning the loss of Justin Pinner, a respected farrier, competitor, and father, who passed away in the early hours of Monday morning. He was 56.
Justin, originally from Devonport and most recently residing in Launceston, was known for his deep connection to horses, dogs, and the land. A master farrier by trade, he was widely regarded for his skill, patience, and dedication — traits that earned the respect of farmers, riders, trainers, and working dog handlers across the region.
He achieved significant recognition in the working dog community, winning the 2023 Tasmanian Working Sheep Dog State Championship, a title that reflected both his experience and his close bond with the dogs he trained.
A family member, Mia Pinner, shared the heartbreaking news publicly, asking for compassion and privacy:
“On behalf of myself and my family, we would kindly ask for to respect our privacy during this time. For those who don’t know, Justin passed away early hours of this morning. This is a shock to not only myself, but everyone a part of our community. Thank you all for understanding; I ask for Facebook posts to be removed until we’ve processed ourselves what’s happened.”
Those who worked alongside Justin describe him as hardworking, straightforward, and unwaveringly committed to his craft. Many credited him with improving not only the wellbeing of their animals, but the quality of their work and training.
In recent months, Justin had been facing legal proceedings following an arrest in November 2024 in Invermay. Police at the time reported that he was charged with several offences and released on bail to appear in court. Those close to the family are requesting that the public allow space for grief and refrain from speculation during this difficult period.
A Personal Loss Felt Across Communities
Justin’s passing has deeply affected family, friends, clients, and members of the agricultural and working dog networks that span across Tasmania.
He is remembered primarily as a father, a role his family says defined him beyond all others.
Funeral and memorial arrangements have not yet been announced as the family takes time to process their loss.
The community is asked to respect the family’s request for privacy and sensitivity during this time.
